4 Shows to Watch on Long Journeys

One of the major downsides of long-distance travel is that there’s a lot of time to fill. You might spend hours in the back of a car, a train carriage, or the passenger compartment of an airplane, over the course of a given journey.

Fortunately, the modern age provides us with plenty of distractions. If you have a long flight ahead of you, then you can spend the time bingeing on a popular television show. Download it in advance – or use the onboard WiFi. Just be sure that you’re taking sensible precautions. A free VPN for iPhone will help to ensure that no one is snooping on your data!

The Good Place

What makes The Good Place so bingeable is the fact that the episodes are tightly scripted. Every twenty minutes or so, there’s a twist – and, in the afterlife setting, the twists are wacky enough that you won’t see them coming. It’s heartwarming, in places very dark, but ultimately wholesome. While you might put it in the same comedy bracket as things like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Office, it’s not afraid to wade into the deep waters of profundity.

Friends

Friends regularly tops lists of the most popular sitcoms of all time. The creators, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, crafted something that was authentic and relatable – but it was the casting that really elevated the show, sold the gags, and ultimately created something that’s still being quoted endlessly, decades later. The chances are good that you’ve seen Friends a million times before; if you haven’t, it’s time to see what the fuss is about.

The Chair

What if you’re looking for something a little bit more bite-sized and contemporary? This drama, featuring Sandra Oh, is set on a university campus, where the head of the English department must grapple with a scandal involving a lover and another professor. It’s just six episodes long (having been canceled after just one season), which means it’s a perfect way to pass a three-hour journey.

Extraordinary

The world of film and television is utterly saturated by superhero stories. But this one stands out, thanks to a focus on someone who isn’t quite extraordinary – yet. While her peers have all developed superpowers at eighteen, Jen has yet to develop hers at twenty-five. Cue wholesome comedy about not quite fitting in. You can get through the whole thing in four hours, which makes this an obvious choice for those with a love of these kinds of stories.
