What to Bring to an Outdoor Movie in Edmonton
Lawn chairs/blanket or both - chairs for the adults, blanket up front for the kids. Inflatable or wind catching chairs are a popular choice because you can set them up in seconds and have a comfortable place to watch the movie. Blankets are must-have because after dark the weather cools off quickly in Edmonton.
Bug spray. Dusk in an Edmonton park in summer means mosquitoes, every time. The mosquitoes are heavy after the record rainfall we’ve had this summer. Spray before you go, spray when you arrive and spray mid-movie.
Layers and a cozy blanket. Movies start at dusk (9:30–10 PM in June and July!) and river valley evenings cool off fast, even after a 28° day. Bring layers and a blanket to make sure that everyone stays warm - especially during those double features!
Snacks and water. Many community screenings run $1 concessions (popcorn, chips, hot dogs), but bring backup for double features, or when the concession closes. Snacks from home will stretch that summer fun budget even further.
A flashlight or headlamp for the walk back to the car in the dark. You can even bring glow sticks to keep track of your kids when the sun goes down, or a bit more fun to the outdoor movie night.
Planning Your Outdoor Movie Night
Arrive 30–60 minutes early. The best blanket real estate goes fast at popular screenings, and most events open early with pre-show activities — face painting, giveaways, food trucks - so the early arrival is part of the night. Plus, it gives the kids time to run around and get rid of some energy before settling down for the movie!
Check the start time, not just the date. Outdoor movies start at dusk, and in an Edmonton June that means as late as 10 PM. For younger kids, look for events with earlier screenings or double features with an early show — or embrace the late night and plan a slow morning. More and more local outdoor movies are beginning earlier with the use of daytime LED screens!
Have a weather plan. Outdoor screenings are weather-dependent and organizers usually make the call on the event's Facebook page the same day — check before you load the van. A few community events move indoors to the hall; but most will reschedule for another date!
Feed everyone first. Dusk start plus $1 popcorn is a snack plan, not a dinner plan. Grab something easy, like a $10 pizza and feed the kids pre-movie, on the cheap - or make something and bring it from home.
Make it free-fun month. Most of these screenings cost nothing, which makes an outdoor movie the best-value family night of an Edmonton summer - paired with a spray park visit, you've filled a whole day for the price of popcorn.
