Planning a weekend in Edmonton with kids
It is Thursday, the week got away on you, and someone at the table wants to know what we are doing Saturday. We know that feeling. This page exists so you do not have to open fifteen tabs to answer it.

What can we do for free?
Plenty. Festivals, library programs, spray parks, community events and outdoor movies are free most weekends. Free listings carry a green tag, and there is a whole guide to free things to do in Edmonton if that is the deciding factor.
What if it rains?
Edmonton summers bring sudden afternoon storms that pass in an hour. Libraries, recreation centres, museums and indoor playgrounds are the usual fallback, and most run drop-in programming at weekends without needing to book.
Is there anything for toddlers?
Yes — library story times, drop-in playgroups, farm visits and the smaller neighbourhood festivals tend to suit under-fives best. The playgrounds map is filtered by feature if you need a toddler climber rather than a zipline.
How far ahead should we book?
Most weekend events are drop-in. Ticketed things — theatre, workshops, farm experiences — usually sell out a week or two out in summer and around the holidays. Anything needing a booking says so on its own page.
What about long weekends?
Family Day, Victoria Day, Heritage Day, Labour Day and Thanksgiving all fall on a Monday in Alberta, and the guide includes that Monday. Expect bigger festival programming and busier parking on those weekends.
