University of Alberta Observatory Offers FREE Weekly Drop-in Solar and Night Sky Viewing

If you’re searching for a fun and free way to spark your child’s curiosity this winter, the University of Alberta’s Department of Physics Astronomical Observatory’s drop in observatory is a must-visit. Every Thursday throughout January, families are invited to drop in for daytime solar viewing and evening night-sky observation. It’s an easy, no-pressure outing, with no previous registration required.

At lunchtime, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, the observatory opens its solar telescopes for safe viewing of the Sun. Kids can see real sunspots and learn firsthand about the powerful energy that keeps life going on Earth. It’s a refreshing mid-day break from the long winter indoors, and staff are on-site to explain what’s happening on the surface of our closest star.

Once the Sun dips below the horizon, the observatory shifts to a journey across the night sky. On Thursdays in January, families can come after dark — typically around 7:00 to 8:00 pm in winter — to look through telescopes aimed at sparkling constellations, planets, and other wonders. Volunteers guide visitors through what they’re seeing and happily answer every curious question your young astronomer might ask.

These programs are especially engaging for school-aged kids, though younger siblings are welcome to come along and share the excitement. Volunteers and staff make the experience accessible to anyone — no background in science required, just curiosity.

Because the telescopes are outdoors, bundling up is key; warm coats, boots, hats, and gloves will help everyone enjoy their time under the stars. The observatory may close if temperatures dip to –20 °C or colder, so checking conditions before you head out is a smart idea. Even if clouds roll in, there are often indoor displays and hands-on activities to keep kids learning and engaged.

Located on the fifth floor of the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS), the observatory is easy to find once you’re on campus.

As the days of January stretch on, give your family a reason to look up. Turn Thursday into your weekly astronomy adventure — watching the Sun dance at noon and the stars come alive at night. Wonder is waiting, right here in Edmonton.
