The Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair Has Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off and Giant Pumpkin Drop
If your kids have never seen a thousand-pound pumpkin in person, this is the year to fix that. About two hours northeast of Edmonton, the tiny town of Smoky Lake (population just over 1,000) swells to nearly 10,000 visitors every fall for the Great White North Pumpkin Fair — and honestly, it's one of the most charming small-town festivals in the province.

What's Happening at the Smoky Lake Pumpkin Festival
The fair kicks off Friday evening with gates opening on Main Street, food trucks rolling in, and an outdoor beer garden for the grown-ups. Saturday is the big day, with activities running all day long:
The Great White North Pumpkin Weigh-Off, where growers from across Alberta bring in giant pumpkins to be crowned the heaviest
A farmers' and artisan market packed with local vendors
A corn maze and midway for the kids

Between events, wander the museum (housed in the historic Victoria School), grab something from the bakery, and let the kids loose in the play pavilion.
Know Before you Go: Smoky Lake Pumpkin Festival
Pack layers — early October in Smoky Lake can swing from sunny to chilly fast. The town is small and very walkable, so once you park, you can cover most of the festival on foot. And if you're making a day of it, the Iron Horse Trail sits just steps from Pumpkin Park if anyone needs to burn off extra energy before the drive home.
It's a low-key, genuinely fun way to spend a fall Saturday — and a nice change of pace from the usual pumpkin patch closer to home.
