The fourth guardian has arrived. The Black Tortoise of the North is the newest mural in the Four Guardians of Chinatown series, and it's being unveiled with a light show countdown that illuminates the wall and brings the celestial guardian to life.
This is a gentle, meaningful gathering. The Black Tortoise stands for grief, remembrance and healing, and the evening honours the lives lost in Edmonton's Chinatown with a candlelight vigil.
Outside, families can take in live music from Melafrique, a lion dance by Ging Wu Martial Arts Association, Indigenous hand drumming and round dance led by Chubby Cree, spoken word, and Chinese fusion performances. Indoors, quiet and supported spaces are open for anyone who needs them.
It's an all-ages event, and Boyle Street's outreach team will be on site throughout to help keep the space safe and welcoming. It's a good chance to talk with kids about public art, community and remembering together.
