Discovery Canyon in Red Deer: Free Tubing Family Guide (2026)

Our Alberta kids have grown up looping Discovery Canyon's tube run, and it hasn't lost a bit of its magic. This free seasonal park at Red Deer's River Bend Recreation Area features a natural river-fed pool and a gentle rapids channel that carries tubers down into a beach-like wading area — where they hop out, run back up, and go again. All afternoon. Guaranteed.

In recent years, it’s had a makeover - but still packed with the same amount of summer fun and now with a sand, zero entry, wading pool for the youngest road-trippers in your crew.

This is part of our full guide to the best outdoor waterparks in Alberta.

Know Before You Go

  • Location: River Bend Recreation Area, 3.5 km north of the 30 Avenue & 67 Street roundabout, Red Deer (~90 minutes from Edmonton)

  • Cost: Free if you bring your own tube $7/person through a bracelet system (unlimited swaps that day), or bring your own

  • Website:  River Bend Golf and Recreation

Parent Tips

  • Water shoes, water shoes, water shoes. The channel bottom is natural and can be rocky.

  • River-fed means cool water. This is a park for genuinely hot days, and it's glorious on them.

  • Bring your own tubes to save money, but the $7 rental is handy if you don't want to haul them and try to find a place to fill them.

  • Pack a picnic (or order in). We visit Discovery Canyon multiple times during the summer and have started to order pizza to be delivered to the Canyon. It makes for an easy lunch, and it’s generally less expensive than feeding the kids from the concession. Plus, it makes the day feel really special for the kids.

FAQs

Is Discovery Canyon really free? Yes. Park admission is free. You only pay if you rent a tube ($7/person for the day). Keep this outing easy on your wallet by bringing your own tubes and snacks from home!

What ages is it best for? The tube run is ideal for school-age kids; the shallow wading areas work for toddlers and the slides work for kids up to twelve. Older than that and they start to look for more thrills than Discovery Canyon can offer.

Is the water treated? No. It's natural water from the Red Deer River, which is part of the charm. It's monitored by the operator, but expect a river-swimming experience rather than a pool.

When does it open for the season? Typically, mid to end June running to the September long weekend, 11am–7pm daily — but it's fully weather-dependent, so check the River Bend website first.
