Before the Christmas lights go up, Edmonton's most famous holiday house turns spooky. Maisie's Magical Christmas House swaps its candy canes for skeletons, monsters and pumpkins every fall, with more than $30,000 worth of Halloween displays glowing in the yard after dark.

The house is named for the owner's late mother, Maisie. It started in 2004 with a few strings of lights put up to make her happy, and it has grown every year since as a tribute to her. Today it's one of the best-loved free stops in the city, at Halloween and at Christmas.

Visit once the sun goes down so you see the whole display lit up. Bring your phone, because the kids will want a photo in front of every skeleton. It's spooky without being scary, so it works for little ones too.

Entry is free, and the family encourages guests to bring a donation for the Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS), a cause Maisie's has supported for years. Make it the first stop on a Halloween house crawl, then use our Haunted Halloween Map to find more decorated houses nearby.
