9 Outdoor Movies to Watch in Edmonton in September

Summer is not done with you yet. The screens are still going up, and September might be the best month to catch one. Dusk lands earlier now, so movies start earlier too, which means younger kids can actually make it to the credits. The nights are cooler, so pack the blanket. And once October's Halloween drive-in wraps, that's it until next summer. The second weekend alone stacks five screenings across two nights. Here's every outdoor movie left on the calendar this month.

Here’s where to watch drive in and outdoor movies in Edmonton in September

September 3 to 6

Horizon Long Weekend Drive-In | Sept 3 to 6, Horizon Drive-In. Four nights of screenings over the long weekend at the closest real drive-in to the city. Ticketed, one car, tune your radio and settle in. The classic version of the whole thing.

September 6

Sunset Cinema: Movie in the Park | Sept 6, Forest Terrace. A community screening on the grass. Come early for the good real estate up front and let the kids burn off energy before it gets dark.

September 11

FREE Outdoor Movie Night | Sept 11, St. Peter Lutheran, 57 Stanley Dr, St. Albert. Free, and so are the popcorn, the cocoa and the door prizes. St. Peter's seventh year running a PG movie the Friday after Labour Day. Starts promptly at 8 PM, so roll in early with chairs or a blanket.

September 12 (the big night)

Four screenings, one Saturday. Pick your neighbourhood.

Movie Under the Stars | Sept 12, Fort Saskatchewan. Fort Sask's big outdoor night, with room to spread out and pre-show activity before the screen lights up.

Movie Night in the Park | Sept 12, Lewis Estates, 924 Picard Drive. Gates at 6, movie around 8 at dusk, tickets a dollar. Hit the Night Market from 5 to 8 PM first for local vendors and a treat before the show.

FREE Schonsee Outdoor Movie | Sept 12, Schonsee. A free neighbourhood screening in the northeast. Bring chairs, bring bug spray, bring snacks.

Beverly Heights Outdoor Movie and Community Day | Sept 12, Beverly Heights. A full community day that rolls straight into a movie after dark. Free, and a whole afternoon plus a film for the price of nothing.

September 19

Sept 19 is Community League Day across Edmonton, so watch for more neighbourhood screenings to pop up close to the date. Two are locked in already.

Community League Day | Sept 19, Allard outdoor rink. A full evening, 5 to 10 PM. Food trucks, face painting, balloon twisting and a library tent until 8, then the movie at dusk around 8:15. Bring bug spray, and there is a porta-potty on site for the mid-movie breaks. The film is still to be confirmed, so check before you go.

St. Albert Dodge Drive-In Movie Night | Sept 19, St. Albert. A drive-in on the dealership lot, and one of the last easy outdoor movies of the month before the season winds down.

Heads up: most organizers post the actual film title and start time on their event page closer to the date, so tap through to confirm what is showing before you load the van. Outdoor screenings are weather-dependent too, and the call usually goes out on the event's Facebook page the same afternoon.

Before you go

September nights in the river valley cool off fast, so this is layers-and-a-blanket season now, not shorts. Two more things earn their spot in the bag: bug spray, because dusk in an Edmonton park still means mosquitoes, and a flashlight for the walk back to the car. Feed everyone first, since a dusk start plus dollar popcorn is a snack plan, not dinner.

For the full what-to-bring list and every screening as it gets added, keep the Edmonton outdoor movies guidebookmarked.

That's nine chances left. Once they're gone, they're gone until June. Grab a night, pack the blanket, go.
