Free Teen Program at Edmonton Rec Centres Almost Nobody Knows About
If you've got a teenager and three empty hours between the school bell and dinner, Edmonton has a program built exactly for that gap - and there's a good chance you've never heard of it.
Free Youth After School Program
The Youth After School Program is a partnership between the City of Edmonton and 11 non-profit agencies, running free drop-in and registered programming for kids ages 8-17 at seven recreation centres and four arenas, weekdays from roughly 3-6pm. Since it launched in 2022, youth visits to city rec centres have climbed to over 848,000 a year — up 20% — but it's still one of the most under-publicized programs the city runs.
What's actually on offer (it's not just gym time):
The Core Youth Centre — a general drop-in youth space, running most weekdays 3-6pm
Youth Connections — another drop-in social space, typically 3:30-5:30pm
Chess 101 — free weekly chess instruction, 4-5pm
Sports Explorer — rotating sports programming, 3-6pm
iRockSTEM — hands-on science and tech programming, 3:30-5:30pm
Loud and Clear — public speaking and acting, 4-5:30pm
Tutoring & Board Games — academic support paired with casual games, 4-6pm
Youth Zone — an extended-hours drop-in space, running as early as 12:30pm on some days
Wolves Basketball & Soccer, Boys Soccer for Newcomers, T.A.N.G. Leadership & Volleyball Camp — registered sports programs with a leadership/mentorship focus
Brave Space and Youth Mentorship Program — social-emotional support programming run by community partners
Exact programs, times, and locations shift by recreation centre and by term, so the specific offerings your teen can access depend on which rec centre is closest to you.
Pair these teen programs with the reduced cost After-School Youth Pass
If your teen wants to use the fitness centre, pool, or gym instead of (or alongside) the structured programming, the After-School Youth Pass covers that separately — $20/month or $2/day, ages 8-17, weekdays 1-5:30pm, valid at any City of Edmonton recreation centre.
Find the current program list, locations, and how to register or drop in on the City's Youth After School Program page.
